I'm going to start off this festive week paying homage to the woman who graciously gave me half of the items in my outfit today. My favorite cousin Malaika. I know you're not supposed to have favorites amongst family, but she's the person I'm closest to, so no one should take it personal, it's just the honest truth.

Malaika is more than a cousin to me, she's always been like a big sister. We lived together in my grandma's house growing up when I was but a mere 8-year old, and she was fifteen. I remember catching her booty-poppin' in the mirror, and whispering sweet nothings on the phone to some boy. At the time, she thought I was the most annoying person ever.  She and my other cousin went to the length of creating something called the "Penny People." Stating that they were "penny fairies" who gave me the privilege to be a part of the penny people. I gave them pennies every day for a week or two and practiced their made up symbols until the day my mom caught me doing the symbol after putting a penny under my pillow. She asked questions and I found out they were finagling me. They gave me my pennies back.

We lived together again when she graduated from college and I was a high schooler. She was there for me when I had me teenager-tiffs with mom. Now we both live in Philly as adults, and it's great to be able to look back on all of the memories we have shared. Malaika is awesome - she's one of my confidants and a great friend and family member to have by my side. Hopefully, she won't kill me for this post - love ya cuz!

NOTE: I use the term "festive" loosely, some of you may think - this is NOT festive, but I think it is, and there you have it, LOL.

  1. This post is too good! I had a similar childhood experience, except I played Malaika's role along with my sister and cousin and we tricked another, younger cousin. We told her we were goddesses with all kinds of powers and that we had tasted some unheard of fruit. We never asked for money or anything, but we did use this fruit business to tease her!

  3. Very Festive and eccentric! I love the pattern on your skirt. The post was wonderful! Your relationship with your cousin is like the one I have with my younger cousin chelle. Were six years apart and have always been close, she's more like a younger sibling then a cousin.

I really loved reading about such a wonderful family bond! :)

  4. I found your blog recently, and I love it. I love your outfit and your hair from this day! How did you do your hair? I've been trying to find out how to do this and haven't found a good explanation. Thanks!

  5. Thanks everyone!

@CurlyHeart - for this style, I flat twisted my hair, the style is similar to French braid styles, but with twists!
