Hello Lovelies! I recorded this video last night to show you how I achieved the hairstyle I've been rocking this week. It's really easy - under 5 minutes and requires less than 5 bobby pins easy. Enjoy!
PS - The number of hair posts I put up is directly related to how I'm feeling about it at the moment. So, now, I'm somewhat irked by it. I'm hoping "we both" come around soon - full update next week!

Congo Inspired Hair Style
**UPDATE: I forgot to tell you where the Congo-inspiration came from**
Happy Monday Everyone! Check out the video below for a tutorial on a Congo-inspired style I did. I did this style back in January and just got a chance to upload the video. It is protective, and it's pretty easy also. It has full bantu knots on the top and a roll-style in the back. Enjoy!PS - this weekend I took outfit pics - YAY! I'm going to try my best to get back to daily posting, because I really do missing blogging. Here's to being hopeful, and to a great week!
Why the Congo inspiration? I originally saw a video posted by afr0st0ry with a picture of a Congolese woman with a similar hair style. Her entire head had these type of fuller bantu knots. Additionally, she appeared to have some type of mud mask in her hair. The style looked very nice, so that's where the inspiration came from! Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a picture that resembles this woman's hairstyle, and I can't find the original video either, but that's where the Congo-inspiration came from.
3in6 Hair Challenge Update
I'm right in the midst of week 4 of the 3in6 Hair Challenge, and I'm surprised to say that I've learned and re-learned some things about my hair. I'll break my learning's down by weeks.
Weeks 1-2: I wore small/medium two-strand twists. I washed my hair at the end of week two, and I noticed that a lost very little hair in my wash session - probably half of what I typically lose. I think this was due to the fact that I went straight from to my twists to my wash routine. I normally wear my hair out for one or two days after twists. Observing the minimal hair shedding/loss led me to see that even one to two days of wearing my hair out in loose form affects my hair retention.
Weeks 3-4: I attempted a new protective style at the beginning of week 3, and it was an ultimate FAILURE! The style was a side-cornrow style with the rest of my hair in medium-sized two-strand twists. After I saw the style, I realized that I do not like cornrow styles on me - personal preference. After the failed attempt, I twisted my hair in small two-strand twists. Since I did the FAILED style on wet hair, I also lost more hair than I expected due to re-detangling my semi-dry hair. I haven't twisted my hair on wet hair in over a year. I decided to try this old routine, because I didn't know when I would have time to twist it in the coming days. To my surprise, I found that this method of twisting on wet hair led to more detangling and hair breaking than I remembered. Clearly, that is something I won't do again. I really was about to call the challenge quits at the beginning of week 3, because I was not feeling how my hair was looking. Thankfully, I found another updo style for my twists that I received tons of compliments for, and that I love. Check out pics below.
I'm contemplating box braids for my Week 5-6 hairstyle, however I think I don't like box braids on me, so maybe I should just stick to twists...However, I know I'm getting tired of twists so I'm not sure what I'll decide...maybe I'll just bite the bullet and do some mini-twists - only time will tell!

Loo's Hair Challenge - I'm In
Hello Lovelies, you know how I feel about a challenge...bring it on!!! I decided last minute to participate in Loo's 3in6 hair challenge. The challenge is based off of the idea that hair grows an average of 0.5 inches every month, so it's a 6-month challenge, with a goal to retain 3 inches by following the rules below.
I came up with this updo based on a style I rocked when my dreads started getting longer when I was locking. This style has three flat twists in the back twisted towards the top of my head. I then twisted the ends from the three flat twists into one flat twist on the top of my head. I also did one additional flat twist in the front on one side. Then, I pinned the other side back. Hopefully this makes sense. If I find time, I'll make a video. The first week I wore my typical side-swoop low "bun" with bangs.
Are any of you participating in this challenge? PS - if you don't know about Loo - check her out, she has GORGEOUS HAIR and her blog is pretty cool too!
- Eat fresh fruits and veggies
- Take a daily multivitamin
- Drink lots of water
- Wear twists or braids for 2-4 weeks at a time
- No direct heat
- Pre-poo with coconut oil for 20 minutes SS: I'm subbing coconut oil with Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose because my hair doesn't like coconut oil, and I checked with Loo ;-)
- No trimming

White Elephant Hair: Bantu-Knot Out Updo
Ok guys, my previous experience with Bantu-Knots was an inexplicable FAILURE! After one year of healing, I decided to give them a try after I saw a wonderful tutorial from Naptural85 to get the look you saw in this post. I followed her tutorial to-a-tee, then I used a headband to pull some hair back and pinned the back up with hair pins. Here are some pics from this style on my hair.
Here's the video/tutorial - hopefully you too love the final look!
Know that I loved this look, however the downside, was that it only lasted one day for me. SMH. I think that curly/twist-out/braid-out/bantu-knot out styles must last longer for people with more of a curl pattern because the actual style is closer to their texture. I think this has been the main reason for my hair frustration - after one day, all of my "out" styles look like an afro. I love my afro, but when I'm going for a twist-out look, I don't want an afro! Additionally, I feel that those out styles are easier to maintain than my afro, which leads to less knots and tangles. Ok, just had to vent a little. If any of you try this style, let me know how well it holds up for you. Naptural85 wore this style for 3 - 4 days before she re-did it.

Another updo
Unfortunately, this one has no funky title :(. I got inspiration from CurlyChronicles for this style. I made a quick video for it yesterday and posted it on youTube. I think this style will also work well on straight hair. Enjoy!

Video Tutorial: The Fonz Hairstyle
Ok ladies & gents, I made another video how-to. This one is for 'The Fonz' hairstyle. This is the style I did in my first outfit of the day post. It includes a backwards french braid and a hooked front, somewhat similar to the Oompa Loompa style. It's an easy, protective and sassy updo! Forgive me for all of the editing...I talk fast and say ridiculous things that should be cut out, lol. I hope you enjoy!
Oompa Loompa Updo Style
Happy Labor Day - I love paid holidays!
I did this style on Friday before the holiday weekend, I was rocking a TIRED bun and wanted something with more class and elegance. This style took all of 5 minutes and lasted 4 days. When I looked in the mirror I thought: "I love a pompadour...actually, this one reminds me of an Oompa Loompa, LOL!" I walked around the entire weekend calling this an Oompa Loompa style.
I did a video how-to for this one because I thought it would be easier to show you how I did this style. I did this style on stretched hair, the video was done in real-time. Originally, I planned on talking during the video. I later decided to cut that stuff out. Let me know what you think!

Friday Fun: Dinosaur-inspired style
FYI, I use anything and everything to get my hairspiration! This style was inspired by me (randomly) thinking about how cool dinosaur scales are...specifically thinking of a T-Rex and how the scales stack up on her back.
Image credit, picture is of a Dinosaur cactus
Enough about the inspiration...here are my pics...
So I'm really giving you PICTURES!!! lol, this style is super easy to do AND will work on a variety of hair lengths. I did this on braid-out hair and used bobby pins to hold my hair down. I just folded my hair to create the scales. You can choose to add more/less dinosaur scales/layers. I was in a hurry and kept it simple with 3 layers. I can imagine me trying this style again with 10 layers...SUPA DUPA CUTE!
Finally, if you want a more "polished look" you can also opt to pin back the front/bangs portion to achieve the look below.
Have an awesome weekend! PS - I did find out some interesting things on water chemistry as it relates to hair, look for that post next week!
Peace
Fat Twist Updo Style
Hello Everyone!
Remember when I was saying that I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to 'do' my hair? Sidenote: I've just been wearing a bun - I JUST reached a bunable length, but the style is iffy to me...it's not really cute YET, plus I have a big head and it shows when I bun, lol. Anyway, I used some inspiration from youTuber chisellecouture to try a version of a style she did. It's a Fat Twist Updo style. Here are my pics...

Forgive me looking evil as everything in the last pic, lol! I should have taken a 'top of the head' pic to get the best view of the style - sorry. I had 12 twists all together - this style took me less than 30 minutes. It's a good mid-week change up style. This is one of those styles that ALMOST makes it for me. The reason why I say "almost" is because the back is just...blah...it's OK. I'm sure the back will work for me when my hair is longer because I'll be able to wrap the twists like I want to. I like the front, I had to tuck the twists into each other to get the look I wanted. If your hair is longer you don't have to worry about this. Alas, I thought I'd still post pics since it may work well for some and it's protective!

Here's another FAB Style
Friends, I am on a roll with cute styles! I took down my mini-twists on Friday, I kept them in for a little under two weeks. *My hair is SCREAMING for a DC!!!* I was looking for a style for the twist-out since I didn't like how the twist-out was laying "out." I came across a FABULOUS style from chisellecouture's youTube page. Here are the pics...
Those of you who look at Cali's youTube channel know that my hair is at least half the length of hers, yet the style still worked. While her hair was actually tucked in, mine appears to be tucked in in the top bun/poof. Fact is - it worked! The style looked just as cute without a hair accessory too - I will DEFINITELY do this style again!

Mini-Twist Up-Do
My twists are now one week old and they look GREAT! My scalp also feels fine - it's not itchy at all! I've been applying Coconut Oil to the twists and my scalp on a 2-3 day basis. I did an up-do today that has a front hump with an old school french roll in the back. I like it. Pics are below.

Other Side
Top
Front *Sorry it's blurry, it still shows the general style
This style was great for my twists, although I don't always love the spacing that twisted humps provide (see front pic), however this style would work equally well on stretched/curly/kinky hair.
Tutorial: Section off a portion in the front for the front-hump. Gather the sides of the hair toward the middle of your head into a large twist and use a large comb similar to the one in the pic below (without all the frills) to pin hair back in a french roll type of style.
*The clip worked SO WELL, normally I use 100 bobby pins to hold the hair in place.* Use bobby pins and hair pins on the sides and at the top of the roll to pin the rest of the hair in place. Gather hair from the front and pin back with a bobby pin or clip.
Style Trials: French Braid Throw Back
I was browsing through my phone for pictures and came across a throwback that I never got around to posting pics for. This style was inspired by style icon, Eniola, featured on BGLH. Essentially, the style is a side-french braid. Here are the pics...
Remember, this is a throw-back from November, so I don't know specifics on what my hair was like before I did this style, however I can imagine I did this style on stretched OR blown-out hair. It was most-likely stretched since I can count on one hand the number of times I've blown my own hair out. I pinned the "hang-time" up with a bobby pin.
This style was super cute...I wish I took more pics!

Shingai-Inspired Updo
I had a conference to attend for work and wanted to do more than my usual winter 2-strand twists. This style was absolutely elegant, I loved it! I got tons of compliments and would definitely rock it again at a wedding, work, or on the weekend for fun. The style was very similar to the Cinnabun style, with a little Shingai-inspiration since I did not pull it back. I had a total of 8 rolls, 4 on each side, with a part down the middle.
I don't think the pictures capture the essence of the style.I think I'll try this style again without a part down the middle to change it up.
Tutorial: I did this style on blow-dried hair, however it would work equally well on stretched hair. Part hair down middle (optional). Part hair horizontally into four sections (*eight if you did the center part). Gather each section at the end and pin each section back. Use bobby pins or hair pins to hold.

Janelle Monae Inspired-Style
I've had the "I'm bored with my regular styles" itch and have tried a number of new styles like 3-strand twists (post to come on this one), Shingai-inspired style (post to come) AND I did a Janelle Monae-inspired style!!! 2 out of 3 were FABULOUS!!! I'll highlight the Janelle Monae-inspired style in this post.
NOTE: I CLEARLY don't have as much hair as her, it was extremely difficult pulling the back of my hair together into a french roll type of flat twist. I will probably wait to try the style again until my hair is longer. However, it was pretty cute for a first-time try.

Back
I used A LOT of bobby pins to pull this style together. Like I said above, it was difficult pulling the look together with my current length. I did this style on blow-dried hair.
YES - I blow dried my hair (on warm heat)!!! I used a heat protectant AND used plenty of sections to ensure a painless/ minimal hair-loss experience. The blow out was big and fun, but it did not look styled, so I did flat twists kimmay-style soon after, which gave the front bang its texture. I digressed...
I would give a tutorial, but it was so difficult for me to pull this together, I don't feel that I am properly equipped to officially gives tips on this one. I do however, have a suggestion for a youTuber who gave a good tutorial for the style, check out Karleo82's tutorial here. This was a great new funky style for me!
Is it just me...or is this taking you back to Elvis Presley???
Mid-Week "Change-the-Game" Style
Last week I rocked my usual two-strand twist style - it's my staple. I was getting bored with it mid-week and decided to try a bun with a spin*YAY b/c I'm almost past "illegal bun" length*. Check it out...

Originally, I was not going to post anything about this style. However this style warranted me some unexpected compliments, so I felt the need to share :)! Let me also mention that my twists were nearly one-week old at this point, this was a great "change-the-game" mid-week style!
Tutorial: Plat small-medium sized two strand twists all over your head. Section off all of the twists in the front-center-half of your head. Check out my 'Top' pic view for an idea of how much to section off. Take the twists at the top and plat a large flat-like twist toward a side. Pin the twist down with a bobby pin.* Pull the rest of the twists into a bun with an ouchless band.
*If hair is longer, put the remainder of the twist into the bun.
December Greetings & Cinna bun hair style
Happy December!!!
I love this time of year, the cold winter weather allows me to layer up and look fabulous, and who doesn't love the spirit that is around us during the Christmas season!
As we prepare for the holidays (parties, large dinners, etc.), it's VITAL that we have some sharp hairstyles to match our attire. Thus, I'm hoping to find new hairstyles weekly to blog about.
Here are the deets on my first new style...I was perusing youTube on Sunday and came across another FAB hairstyle. It's called the "Cinna-bun hairstyle", here are links to the tutorial: Part 1*FYI, the first half of the vid is a response to something I'm totally unfamiliar with* and Part 2.
Here are pics of the style on me.

Anyway, I think this is a great conservative hairstyle, but it still is very cute/fashionable. I did this style on dry, stretched hair. I washed it and kept it in braids overnight and styled in the morning. It took me about 10 minutes to pull this look together. I pulled my hair back with an elastic stretchy that I got from Rite Aid. :) and did the style. I would try to explain how to do the style, but I don't think I would do a good job, so just watch the video. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
