The Evolution of Style

Dress - Anthro (2008); Tank - Urban; Sandals - Sam Edelman via Nordstrom (2008)

Date: Monday, June 6, 2011

This is one of the few dresses that I spent about $50-$70 for, and I still love it to this day. I love the colors, the subtle butterfly print, the comfortability, just everything is LOVE! Back then, I was less frugal with my spending. Now, I rarely spend more than $50 on one item (outside of a good pair of shoes). It's great that I still have this dress, and that I actually WEAR IT three years later...RARE!

I can honestly say that I don't have a lot of clothing items from 2008 left in my closet. Why? Because I was still figuring out what my style was in 2008. In 2008, I bought some things that were cute, but they weren't "me" - or they didn't flatter my shape as I now know certain cuts can. It really wasn't until LATE 2009, and 2010 that I figured out what my look was. For the past year, I have had some consistency in terms of what was "Monique" what was not "Monique", and what was just AWESOME!

This is the cool thing about style is that it really can evolve and change, mine certainly has.

  2. My style certainly changed (and for the better!) since 2008.

Your dress is beautiful. It reminds me of an African print.

  4. Hear, hear! I'm often embarrassed by some of the styles I've sported over the years, so I make sure to clean out my closet periodically. You're right about this dress, though - it's perennial and has gracefully accommodated your plus one. Lovely.

I'm just now getting to a point where i'm starting to really care about my personal appearance (hair, clothes, etc...), and I've been feeling totally lost. It really must be meant to be that I found your blog, because its great to just visually see some great ideas! Ah! I'm so grateful for this!
Now if only I can figure out how to make this come to fruition in my own life :)...

  6. I'm so grateful for style changes in the right direction! Thank you for all of the lovely comments. Seriously makes me smile.

@AMB- it's been a while! Thank you! You're a natural beauty so I'm sure you don't need a lot extra to put a nice look together. Blogs and magazines are great starts to help you define your look. Then, it's a matter of trial and error!

  7. You rarely spend more than $50 on one item? I can't think of a time in recent memory when I have spent less. And yet, you are far more stylish than I am - even pregnant! I am amazed by you. Clearly I need to rethink my closet and spending.
