White Elephant Hair: Bantu-Knot Out Updo

Ok guys, my previous experience with Bantu-Knots was an inexplicable FAILURE! After one year of healing, I decided to give them a try after I saw a wonderful tutorial from Naptural85 to get the look you saw in this post.  I followed her tutorial to-a-tee, then I used a headband to pull some hair back and pinned the back up with hair pins. Here are some pics from this style on my hair.

Here's the video/tutorial - hopefully you too love the final look!

Know that I loved this look, however the downside, was that it only lasted one day for me. SMH. I think that curly/twist-out/braid-out/bantu-knot out styles must last longer for people with more of a curl pattern because the actual style is closer to their texture. I think this has been the main reason for my hair frustration - after one day, all of my "out" styles look like an afro. I love my afro, but when I'm going for a twist-out look, I don't want an afro! Additionally, I feel that those out styles are easier to maintain than my afro, which leads to less knots and tangles. Ok, just had to vent a little. If any of you try this style, let me know how well it holds up for you. Naptural85 wore this style for 3 - 4 days before she re-did it.

  1. I've found that the longer I leave my twists in, the longer my twist out will last. Your hair looks nice! Sorry it was just a day!

  2. Very cute, I like how you personalized to your liking. I've heard Bantu knots were a hit or miss, which is why I've been hesitant to try just yet. I may have to do some experimenting this weekend though, I like! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Did you twist it back up before going to bed?? Usually for me, I preserve my look by either braiding or twisting back up before heading to bed...usually in larger sections....

  4. @Anon - I didn't twist it back up...it kinda just wasn't happening. All of the curls "fell" by the end of the day, it looked like mush :(. I've found that my hair just doesn't hold a mold very long...

  6. Love this! Did you wear it down at all? I can't wait to take these darn extensions out so I can try more of these cute styles! You inspire me!

  7. @ Erika - Thanks girl!!! I didn't wear it down, it just didn't look right...probably b/c it half-hung down, half stuck up...so I pinned it, lol

  8. Gorgeous! I suggest using a product with some hold, no point in doing all that work for just one day of enjoyment! I haven't found anything perfect yet, but when I get back to the states I am going to try the Bee Mine curly butter (i think its called) as well as Oyin shine & define. I have hair similar to yours and I can also get this look doing the twist & curl method (sumkndawndrful just did this on her channel). twisting my hair into medium sized twists and then curling each one with a loc loop.

  9. I know exactly just what you mean..
My hair has the same problem..
I love Naptural85 channels as well..but my hair is the exact same texture as yours..

I would like to give her ponytail/butterfly maintenance method a go though..but like you..I am just as dubious..as my hair doesn't hold twistouts or braid outs for long either, plus I really can't be bothered with twisting my hair in sections every night.
