Roller Set Video

I posted a new video to YT - it's a Hair how-to, how I get my lovely roller set styles. Also, I somehow made YT partner...click here to visit my channel. Enjoy!

Curly Shirley & 3in6 Update

Both of my outfit posts this week feature my "Curly Shirley" hairstyle. To achieve this style, I did a simple roller set using the snap-on magnetic rollers pictured below.

These snap-on magnetic rollers are ideal for my kinky hair, because the snap-piece helps smooth my kinks to achieve this curly look. I bought the rollers from Sally's for $2.29 for a pack of 8. I set my hair on freshly washed and detangled hair. I used my Denman to smooth each section of hair before rolling it. I used the medium (pink) rollers in the front, and the back. I used the small (green) rollers on the sides. I prefer the medium size, so next time I try this style, I plan on buying more in the medium (pink) size. I can't remember exactly how many rollers I used, but I believe I used somewhere around 30 rollers. Rolling my hair took about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Since I started this style at midnight, I slept in the rollers and sat under a dryer in the morning to ensure my hair was dry. It was of the utmost importance that I made sure my hair was 100% dry for the style to come out. It was equally important to choose small sections. I applied my usual moisturizer/sealant of Aloe Vera Gel and Castor Oil after the wash to each detangled section, and used Bee Mine Curly Hold Butter on each rolled section to set my curls. Here are some pictures.

Unfortunately, it rained on Monday, and since I work outside and wear a hard hat, my hair was on the road to ruins. Since I knew it would start to kink quickly, and become difficult to manage, I did some chunky twists on Monday. Thus, I'm back into my protective styles!

3in6 Update
Now for the official update. I know what you're thinking..."Wait - I thought you HAD to wear protective styles for the challenge." Well - Loo has graciously allowed us two one-week periods to wear our hair out. I rarely wear my hair out for more than 2 days anyway, so I just used this week as one of my weeks. This is what my hair styling looked like for weeks 5-8...

Weeks 5, 6 & 7: I wore mini-twists.
Week 8: I started off with this roller set, and will wrap things up with some chunky two-strand twists done on dry hair.

PS - I definitely think I have gained some length, I will get around to a length check some time around week 9.

It's my birthday so my hair has got to be right!

So, I've always been a fan of celebrating, especially important things like birthdays, promotions, life accomplishments, etc.  In honor of my birthday, I felt the need to "bring it" with my hair.  I did another roller set, however this time I used smaller rollers (click here for my first roller set).

I used the rollers that are 3/8" thick, they are pictured above - you can find them at Sally's. The ones I have are grey.  Result pics shown below.

I love this style - it's super cute!  I don't see it being a regular because of the amount of time the styling takes and the amount of actual wear I get from the style.  Also, it's just not logical to wear my hair out with the type of job I have.  I do like this style for special occasions, I may wear my hair like this for a wedding I'm in next weekend.

The first pic is from today = day-old hair.  The second and third pics are from yesterday.  I set my hair with kimmaytube's leave-in conditioner  and aloe vera gel and slept in the rods (OUCH).  I took the rods out and separated some of the larger sections on Monday morning.  Setting your hair is not difficult, it just takes time and patience.  Tip to naturals doing this style: Be sure to use small hair sections on the rollers.  If you use large sections, the hair won't curl and will be more afro and less-curl.

I expect this to look nice for another 2 days MAX.  I've been putting a satin cap on it at night and moisturizing in the AM.

I finally got around to set my hair!

First, Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms who read my blog and to my mom specifically - I love you!

I bought some rollers a couple of weeks ago with the intent to roller set my hair.  I tried rolling one piece of my hair last week and thought it wouldn't look right considering my kinky hair texture.  I got back to Philly after a visit home last night and decided to just try it.  The verdict is...well, I'll just show you the pictures and let you judge the results.

I think I separated the curls too much in the back - that's why you see some skinny little ringlets.  However, I'm pretty pleased with the overall look.  I did my usual condition/wash/detangle session in sections.  I applied Kinky Curly's Knot Today as a Leave-In along with a local-made whipped shea butter to the large sections.  I applied Trader Joe's Aloe Vera Gel to each individual rolled section to "set" my hair.  You can see my texture at the roots and the curls come right in at the bottom.  Works for me!

The true tell of this style will be to see how long it lasts...I'll try to post pictures of Day 2/3/4 pics and let you know how I keep the style up (if I can).

Various Hair Styles: Braid/Twist, Straws & Big French Braid

I totally went on a hiatus, but that's ok b/c like I said before, I have yet to get a real blog "followers" base, which is fine. Not to mention, I was experiencing some [hear church music playing in back] "life changes."

Quick Half-Marathon/Running Update: My running buddy from work left for grad school so I'm running on my own time now. It's tough to stay motivated at times so I'm desperately looking for a running buddy. Last Saturday when I ran I got caught in the middle of a rain storm and ran with 10 pounds of water on me - [in sarcastic voice] it was great! Last Sunday I ran another 5 miler. I did 2.5 on Tuesday *I had eaten a burger for lunch so that was a TOUGH 2.5*. I will also try to run today.

Hair updates!!! Style Trials
I've really been looking at my hair like...damn, should I have kept my locs? I love being natural, it's nothing about that, but this thick ish on my head is A LOT OF WORK!!! Locs were very low maintenance, and best of all - I always looked good (i.e. my hair was always 'done'). I have been keeping up with trying new styles.

Me with another half braided/twist do (front/back views):

This was cute for me, and it lasted very well.

Here's a pic of me trying a straw set. It failed HORRIBLY on my hair. I mean, you can definitely tell I tried it, but I just didn't like the look for me.

FINALLY, I've been seeing all these long-haired girls with these big side-swiped french braids. I LOVE the style and totally wanted to try it for myself. So I did! I did have to blow dry my hair to get the length necessary for the braids. However, I love the style so much (and hate to blow-dry) so I might see if my hair is long enough for the style if I let it air dry in bantu knots.

I only parted it in the front half and had the two braids meet in the back. I kept this style for 5 days and took out the back half when I was tired of it - still very cute!

Running Milestone...Kind of Late...

I ran on Saturday and ran a total of 5 miles STRAIGHT! WHOO! And it felt so good...I wasn't tired, instead I felt triumphant. Unforch, I haven't really ran since then, but work has got me a lil' crazy-busy. I hope to run tomorrow evening before going to the Franklin Institute's "Is America Colorblind" exhibit.

--> Random Hair Excerpt...I attempted a straw set for my hair last Friday, and I thought it looked an awful hot mess. I was so upset :( I don't know if it was too long or if my technique was just all wrong...maybe all of the above, who knows...I took pics too, I just haven't downloaded them b/c I'm lazy and no one follows this, lol.
